Un voyage dans l’Univers

Photographic Exhibition - 09/11/2020 - 15/01/2021 at the French Institute of Cyprus (59 Strovolos Avenue 2018 STROVOLOS). Open free access to the public only by appointment (from Monday to Thursday from 9:00am to 5:00pm and Friday from 9:00am to 1:00pm. Closed on week-end).

Through this exhibition of 80 photographs, designed and produced by the CNES (the French Space Agency), the French Institute of Cyprus invites you to discover the wonderful human adventures offered by space.

During the promenade, discover the past, present and future exploration programs. Beyond the technological adventure, this exhibition focuses on the human adventure by transporting you on Earth, to meet researchers and engineers, in laboratories and clean rooms, to the Guyanese Space Center, ideal starting point to the cosmos.

While humans have been exploring space for over 60 years, they have only ventured into 2 places on the outskirts of the Earth: the International Space Station and the Moon. Beyond that, it is up to robots, true photographic explorers, to account for these unknown worlds.

Sometimes radiant with colors and textures, sometimes showing desolate landscapes, these images are all impressive, in the sense that they stimulate collective reflection and imagination. But these pictures are above all scientific data informing us about the nature of our Universe: formation of stars, chemical composition of the stars, history of the planets… As such, they are as precious as celestial dust, moon rocks or samples of asteroids brought by spacecrafts and astronauts for 50 years!

The exhibition also pays tribute to the ten French astronauts who stayed in space, from the pioneer Jean-Loup Chrétien in 1982 to the youngest of European astronauts, Thomas Pesquet, who spent nearly two hundred days in the International Space Station (ISS), passing by Claudie Haigneré, the first and only Frenchwoman to have contemplated our blue planet from so far away.
