The TCF (French language proficiency test) is an language proficiency test. It assesses the candidate’s level of French at the time of the exam by positioning him/her at one of the six levels (from A1 to C2) of the competency scale defined by the Council of Europe (CEFR).
Information on TCF
The TCF (Test de Connaissance du Français) is an language proficiency test. It assesses the candidate’s level of French at the time of the exam by positioning him/her at one of the six levels (from A1 to C2) of the competency scale defined by the Council of Europe (CEFR).
Developed by the French Ministry of Education, the test ensures strict methodology validated by a linguists committee composed of the best French and European specialists. TCF score results are reliable measurements for determining proficiency.
It is a multiple-choice test with 76 items that cover reading and listening comprehension and grammatical structures. It also includes optional tests for writing and speaking.
TCF is also offered in the following variants:
- TCF DAP - for non European citizens who wish to apply as a first year undergraduate (Licence 1) to a French university or French school of architecture.
- TCF ANF - for those who wish to apply for French nationality
- TCF Québec - for those who wish to emigrate to Quebec, Canada
For studies in France the lower level required is the B2 level.
